扩散混合是在燃烧室内着火以后的混合阶段。这种混合是在边燃烧、边喷油的情况下进行的混合，是在新鲜空气愈来愈少、燃烧产物愈来愈多、燃烧室温度愈来愈高的情况下进行的，所以扩散混合的情况相当复杂，混合条件十分恶劣。这时，既有均相（气相）混合，亦有气、液双相混合，又有未燃区的低温混合（原预混合的继续），以及已燃区的高温混合；既有燃油与空气的混合，又有燃油、空气、燃烧中间产物（如醛类和CO）和最终产物（CO2/H2O）等多种物质的瞬态混杂。
