悬挑式脚手架一般有两种：一种是每层一挑，将立杆底部顶在楼板、梁或墙体等建筑部位，向外倾斜固定后，在其上部搭设横杆、铺脚手板形成施工层，施工一个层高，待转入上层后，再重新搭设脚手架，提供上一层施工；另外一种是多层悬挑，将全高的脚手架分成若干段，每段搭设高度不超过20m，利用悬挑梁或悬挑架作脚手架基础分段悬挑分段搭设脚手架，利用此种方法可以搭设超过50m以上的脚手架 ，悬挑脚手架外立面须满设剪刀撑。
