《风俗通》曰：“恙，毒虫也，喜伤人。古人草居露宿，故相劳问，必曰无恙。”恙虫卵孵化成幼虫后，爬行到草地或农作物上，一旦有人坐卧或接触，恙幼虫便爬到人体身上叮咬，病原体进入血液后，出现立克次体血症和毒血症症状，导致机体发生一系列病变。2012年5月有媒体报道广州两市民因被恙虫咬而不治身亡的消息引起民众对恙虫的热议。 恙(yàng)虫，又称恙螨、沙虱，能传染恙虫病。此病首先由我国晋朝科学家葛洪（公元313年）发现并记载。在动物分类上，恙螨属节肢动物门蜘蛛纲。全世界已知的恙螨有3000多种，中国有记载的有350余种。 华南地区常见的种类有地里红恙螨、红恙螨和印度真棒螨等。它们在形态上与昆虫的最大区别在于：成虫有4对足，而不是3对。因此，称它为“小昆虫”是不妥的。恙螨传播的病原体为东方立克次体，是一种介于细菌和病毒之间的微生物。
