炎症通常可依病程经过分为两大类：急性炎症（acute inflammation）和慢性炎症（chronic inflammation）。急性炎症起病急骤，持续时间短，仅几天到一个月，以渗出病变为其特征，炎症细胞浸润以粒细胞为主。慢性炎症持续时间较长，常数月到数年，常以增生病变为主，其炎症细胞浸润则以巨噬细胞和淋巴细胞为主。
如超急性排斥反应 急性炎症（acute inflammation）：起病较急，病程较短，数天至一个月内，以变性、坏死和渗出为主，主要是中性粒细胞浸润，临床表现明显。
