志号是邮票的顺序编号，是邮票发行情况的记录。早期邮票上是没有志号的，要想知道一套邮票的发行年代和全套枚数，都要查阅邮票目录，很不方便。1949年把志号印在邮票下面的白边上，好似一条线，把新中国邮票串了起来，成为新中国邮票的特点之一。这种邮票编号方法很快受到各国集邮者的赞许，有些国家也相继在邮票上印了志号。
