心跳骤停（cardiac arrest）是指急性原因导致的心脏突然失去有效排血能力的病理生理状态，也意味着临床死亡的开始。针对心跳骤停所采取的一切抢救措施，称为“心肺脑复苏”（cardiopulmonary resuscitation，CPR）。由心肺复苏的最终目的是恢复病人的社会行为能力。因此，从70年代开始又把“心肺复苏”发展为心肺脑复苏”（cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation,CPCR）。
心肺复苏(CPR)：是对心脏骤停患者所采取的恢复循环及呼吸功能的抢救措施。心肺脑复苏(CPCR)：是对心脏骤停患者所采取的以恢复循环及呼吸功能进而恢复脑功能、不留神经系统后遗症为目的的一系列急救措施。
