心理治疗是双方互动的一个正式的过程，每一方通常由一个人构成，但有可能由两个或更多的人组成。其目的是经由精通人格源起、发展、维持与改变之理论的治疗者，在专业与法律认可下，使用逻辑上与该理论有关的治疗方法，来改善另一方在下列任一或所有领域的无能或功能不良带来的苦恼：认知功能（思维异常）、情感功能（痛苦或情绪不舒适）或行为功能（行为的不恰当）。
