彩色显像管是在真空的状态下，电子束激发涂在玻璃屏上的荧光粉而发光。通过器件把电能转化为光的形式，其过程是用电信号控制阴极发射出的电子，并把电子聚焦成电子束经偏转后射到荧光粉上，把视频信号转变成光信号。彩色显像管的电子束是受选色机构制约的，用电子束来激发它们所对应的荧光粉条，使荧光粉受激发发光而再现彩色图像。
