当液相过冷至实际结晶温度后，经过一段孕育期，在液相内部开始出现许多有序排列的小原子团，称之为晶胚。当晶胚达到某一临界尺寸后，就成为可以稳定存在并自发长大的晶核，这一过程称为形核。 液相结晶过程中，晶核的形成方式有两种：均匀形核（均质形核或自发形核）和非均匀形核（异质形核或非自发形核）。
