彗尾（huìwěi） 一颗彗星的明亮的尾部延伸部分，可以是彗头的扩展或者具有某种结构，因而能与彗头有所区别；彗尾主要由气体和尘埃组成。除了离太阳很远时以外，彗星的长长的明亮稀疏的彗尾，在给人们这样的印象，即认为彗星很靠近地球，甚至就在我们的大气范围之内。1577年第谷指出当从地球上不同地点观察时，彗星并没有显出方位不同：因此他正确地得出它们必定很远的结论。彗星属于太阳系小天体。
