张中立，幼年家极贫苦，12岁才得入塾读书。两年后因无力交纳束修而退学，16岁得人帮助重新入学。以是，勤奋自勉，倍加刻苦。22岁考中秀才。1903年，35岁时，以第十四名高中清光绪癸卯（二十九年）科举人（清最后一科乡试）。中举后，执教临淄县立高等小学堂，任堂长兼国文教员。
