开片本为瓷器釉面的一种自然开裂现象。开裂的原因有两种：一是成型时坯泥沿一定方向延伸，影响了分子的排列；二是坯、釉膨胀系数不同，焙烧后冷却时釉层收缩率大。因此开裂原是瓷器烧制中的一个缺点；但人们掌握了开裂的规律而制出的开片釉（即裂纹釉），变成为瓷器的一种特殊装饰了。宋代的钧、汝、官、哥窑都有这种产品。开片又称冰裂纹， 按颜色分有鳝血、金丝铁线、浅黄鱼子纹，按形状分有网形纹、梅花纹、细碎纹等。
