广义坐标是用来描述系统位形所需要的独立参数，或者最少参数。当分析有的问题时（尤其是当有许多约束条件的时候），尽量选择独立的广义坐标。因为这样可以减少代表约束的变量。但是，当遇到非完整约束时，或者当计算约束力时，就必须使用关于这约束力的，相应的广义坐标。 广义坐标是不特定的坐标。假若，我们用一组广义坐标来导引方程，所得到的答案，可以应用于较广泛的问题；并且，当我们最后终于设定这坐标时，答案仍旧是正确的。拉格朗日力学，哈密顿力学都需要用到广义坐标来表示基要概念与方程。
