古生物中的巨猪并不是泛指“巨大的猪”，它特指一类生活在古近纪的动物。 生活在古近纪，大约距今6500万年，长相并不是巨大的猪，而是在较短的时间内体型发展到野牛这么大，故有“巨猪”之称。它们出现于始新世中期，在渐新世时繁荣一时，便在中新世绝灭了。虽然体型庞大，但比起其他蹄类，巨猪的劣势是脑量显然小很多，脑子的体积居然和一只橘子差不多。
