实现热能和机械能相互转化的媒介物质称为工质，依靠它在热机中的状态变化（如膨胀）才能获得功，而做功通过工质才能传递热。 燃气在燃气发动机中、蒸汽在蒸汽发动机中工作时，都是把热能转换成机械能以产生原动力。制冷剂在压缩式制冷装置中则消耗一定量的机械能将热量从低温处传送到高温处，以达到制冷的目的。利用压缩机、鼓风机或通风机对空气进行不同程度的压缩以提高其压力，实质上也是一个把原动机所提供的机械能转化为热能的过程。由于气态物质受热之后具有良好的膨胀性能和巨大的作功本领，故用作各类热机的工质均为气态物质。
