岩层（Rock formation）是一个地质学专业术语。覆盖在原始地壳上的层层叠叠的岩层，是一部地球几十亿年演变发展留下的“石头大书”，地质学上叫做地层。地层从最古老的地质年代开始，层层叠叠地到达地表。一般来说，先形成的地层在下，后形成的地层在上，越靠近地层的上部的岩层形成的年代越近。
