山曲主要流传在山西西北部的河曲、保德和陕西的府谷、神木一带，内容多为情歌，少部分内容为“走西口”。历史上的晋西北地贫民饥、灾荒频繁，农民迫于生计，走出山西与内蒙古交界处古长城的关口（即“西口”）逃荒，到河套一带打工谋生，谓之“走西口”。
