层裂是物理风化作用的一种。基岩表层出现层裂的原因，除温差风化的原因外，还与基岩卸载有关。原先埋藏在地下深处的岩石受到较大的围压。当其上面覆盖的岩块被剥蚀掉后，上部压力的降低导致基岩向上膨胀，从而产生大致平行于基岩露出表面的破裂面和一些近于垂直表面的裂隙。这种层裂作用同其他风化联合作用，便可造成突出地面的剥离丘。
