小火电机组，一般泛指5万千瓦容量以下发电机组。可以分为供热机组和发电机组。现在的小火电机组一般都是热电联产的供热机组了。纯凝汽式的发电机组，在我国已经开始逐步淘汰拆除。热电联产的供热机组，可以极大地提高全机组热效率，因为部分蒸汽在汽轮机内做功后被抽走进行利用，减小了汽轮机排汽热损失。另一方面，目前国内正在逐步的实行集中供热，取代城市小锅炉，又从另一个方面提高了整个社会的能源利用效率。所以，热电联产的小火电机组是一种比较优越的能源供应方式。
