射线强度指的是放射性核素单位时间内发射的粒子数目。与放射性活度的区别是：前者是单位时间内发射的粒子数目，后者是单位时间内发生衰变的次数。每次衰变中放出的粒子数不只一个，放射性活度相同的两种核素，射线强度值不尽相同。例如，32P核一次衰变只放出一个β粒子，而60Co核一次衰变中要放出一个β粒子和2个γ光子。显然，放射性活度相等的60Co核素的射线强度比32P核素的射线强度大两倍。
