寄宿制是大学住宿制度。规定为学生提供住宿的地方。英国牛津大学和剑桥大学最早建立。19 世纪末至 20 世纪初建立的城市大学（又译“市立大学”）主要实行走读制。20 世纪 60 年代建立的新大学恢复此制。以后，其他大学也多方设法为学生提供宿舍。据统计，1980 年近一半的大学生寄宿在学院、学生宿舍或大学所提供的其他住所里，约 35%的大学生租住公寓，住家走读的仅 16%左右。各大学寄宿学生比例不同，少则 1/4，多达 3/4。
