定步（pacing）是指在课堂学习中确定一系列课堂活动的速度。源于斯金纳发起的程序教学运动。在斯金纳提倡教学机器和程序教学之前，传统的教学都是由教师控制，而在程序教学中则由学生按自己的学习情况规定速度。包括以下三个方面的考虑：（1）谁决定？这在程序教学中争论最大，因为早期程序教学认为学习者必须自定步调，自己规定学习进度。之后，有些人已不把自定步调看作是程序教学所必须执行的规定。
