凡以宁心安神为主要功效，用于心神不安病证的方药称为安神药。根据药物来源及应用特点不同，安神药分为重镇安神和养心安神两类。前者为质地沉重的矿石类物质，如朱砂、琥珀、磁石等，多用于心悸失眠、惊痫发狂、烦躁易怒等阳气躁动、心神不安的实证；后者为植物药，如酸枣仁、柏子仁、远志、合欢皮、夜交藤等，具有养心滋肝作用，用于心肝血虚、心神失养所致的心悸怔忡、失眠多梦等神志不宁的虚证，并常与补血养心药同用，以增强疗效。
在中医药理论下缬草使用其根及根茎作为药用，是安神药中养心安神的药物。
