太阳光球下面处于对流状态的一个层次，一般认为厚约15万公里，有人认为更厚，也有人认为薄到约1万公里。层内的氢不断电离，增加气体比热，破坏流体静力学平衡，引起气体上升或下降。由于升降很快，流体元几乎处于绝热状态；又由于比热大，在重力场中上升时，流体元的温度就比周围高，密度小，因浮力而继续上升。流体元一旦下降，温度比周围低，密度大，就继续下降。这样就形成了对流。
