隋开皇十年(590)改晋阳县为太原县，宋太平兴国四年(979)废。于晋阳故城北筑新城置平晋县，熙宁三年(1070)并入阳曲县，政和中年复置平晋县，属太原府。
要是从北京去的话，最保险的路是乘火车先到太原或忻县，然后乘汽车从南面进入五台山。
