天然焦是具粘结性的烟煤受岩浆直接接触在自然条件下焦化的产物。煤经地下自燃也能生成天然焦。天然焦的宏观特征与煤有明显的差别﹐呈致密块状﹐有时为多孔状﹑层状构造﹔灰黑色至钢灰色﹐光泽暗淡﹐坚硬﹐比重大。常具六方柱状节理。裂隙和气孔中充填较多矿物﹐主要为碳酸盐。
