天使论(angelology)源于两个希腊文名词：angelos (使者，执行任务或行另一人之所行的人)与logos (拉丁文是logia，教理、学说、论述)。因此，天使论意指有关天使的教理或学说。一般而言，普世流行的信仰都认为天使是好的神。坏的神通常称为「魔鬼」(参 703)或「恶神」。有关恶神的教理或学说称为「鬼神论」。
