大陆岛指的是其地质构造与邻近的大陆相似，原属大陆的一部分，由于地壳下沉或海水上升致其与大陆相隔成岛。 大陆岛的形成也有多种原因、大陆岛有的是在古代大陆冰川环境下形成的冰碛丘陵，后因海面上升而成为海洋中的岛屿。有的是由于断层作用或地壳下沉形成的海峡，使原来大陆的一部分被海水分割出去形成的岛屿。在大河河口，由于堆积作用强盛，可形成冲积岛屿。
