大气过电压又称冲击过电压,是指当雷云主放电时(放电电流为波头很陡、波幅值很高、衰减很快的冲击波)作用在物体上形成的冲击过电压。大气过电压可以分为直击雷过电压和感应雷过电压。直击雷或雷电感应突然加到电力系统中,使电气设备所承受的电压远远超过其额定值。对建筑物、人身和设备绝缘有很大的危害性。为防止大气过电压,通常采取装设避雷针、避雷线、避雷器,合理提高线路绝缘水平,采用自动重合闸装置等措施。
