外大气层，又称逸散层。一般指距地表500-600km以上的大气层。该层中主要是原子态氧、氢、氦和分子态的氮、氧。1000km以上则只有原子态的氦、氢和氧。高空强烈的太阳辐射使这些原子具有极高的能量和速度。由于大气十分稀薄，气体质点很少互相碰撞，有些速度较快的中性质点（氢、氦原子）能克服地球引力而逸入星际空间。原子氢缓慢而不断逃逸，使大气中氢含量极少。
