混凝土外加剂是在搅拌混凝土过程中掺入，占水泥质量5%以下的，能显著改善混凝土性能的化学物质。混凝土外加剂的特点是品种多、掺量小，对混凝土的性能影响较大具有投资少、见效快、技术经济效益显著的特点。随着科学技术的不断进步，外加剂已越来越多地得到应用，外加剂已成为混凝土除4种基本组分以外的第5种重要组分。 外加剂对混凝土的抗碳化性能有一定的改善作用，混凝土的碳化深度和孔隙率间存在一定的线性关系；外加剂对混凝土的抗冻性影响很大，掺引气减水剂的混凝土抗冻性较好，而单掺早强剂对混凝土抗冻性无改善作用。
