①对“内传”而言。附经作传，广引事例而不完全以解释经义为主的书。如《韩诗外传》（汉韩婴传，《韩诗内传》亡，有辑佚）。又相对於《春秋左传》（左丘明撰），《国语》也有《春秋外传》之称。韦昭《国语解叙》：“其（指《国语》）文不主于经，故号为外传。”又，各书称内外传，体例不一。如《吴越春秋》以吴为内传，越为外传；《越绝书》以作者所不一，出于传说者为外传。
