外丹相对内丹而言，又称炼丹术、仙丹术、金丹术、烧炼法、黄白术等，是近代化学物理前驱。指用炉鼎烧炼金石，配制成药饵，做成长生不死的金丹。炼丹术在我国起源甚早，约产生于上古，汉武帝时最盛方士李少君“化丹沙为黄金”以作饮食器，就是烧炼金丹。东汉魏伯阳著《周易参同契》，用阴阳论述金丹，被誉为“万古丹经王”。
