堆积平原是由于地壳长期大面积下沉或不同规模的盆状凹陷，不断为各种成因的堆积物所补偿而堆积形成的广阔平地。例如渤海底部和河北省的滨海平原至今仍以每年lcm的速度沉降，第四纪（距今200万年前）以来的沉降总幅度已达800〜1000m以上。但河流泥沙堆积的速度超过了地壳下沉速度，所以平原正在扩大增长，向渤海推进，茫茫沧海将变成万顷良田。这类平原可依平原堆积物的成因，划分为洪积平原、冲积平原、湖积平原、海积平原等。世界上范围最广大的堆积平原多分布在近海地区，如中国的华北大平原。
