国际金本位制度是以黄金作为国际储备货币或国际本位货币的国际货币制度。世界上首次出现的国际货币制度是国际金本位制度，它大约形成于1880年末，到1914年第一次世界大战爆发时结束。在金本位制度下，黄金具有货币的全部职能，即价值尺度、流通手段、贮藏手段、支付手段和世界货币。英国作为世界上最早发达的资本主义国家，于1821年前后采用了金本位制度。19世纪70年代，欧洲和美洲的一些主要国家先后在国内实行了金本位制，国际金本位制度才大致形成了。
