2007年5月17日第61届联合国大会为突出语言多样性对于促进文化多样性及国际间相互理解的重要意义，联大星期三下午通过决议，宣布2008年为“国际语言年”。希望以此促进世界语言和文化的多样性，增进各国人民之间的相互理解。决议强调，联合国的6种官方语言汉语、英语、法语、俄语、阿拉伯语和西班牙语都具有同等的重要性，必须在联合国的信息发布过程中得到恰当的使用，以便消除英语和其他5种官方语言在使用程度上的差异。
