固结试验是指测定饱和粘性土试样在侧限的条件下加压的压缩试验。将试样在侧限和容许轴向排水的容器中逐渐增加压力，测定压力和试样变形或孔隙比的关系，变形和时间的关系，以便计算土的单位沉降量、压缩系数、压缩指数、回弹指数、压缩模量、 固结系数及原状土的前期固结压力等。测定项目视工程需要而定。有常规固结试验、快速固结试验、高压固结试验和连续加荷固结试验，包括等应变速率固结试验、等速加荷固结试验、等梯度固结试验等。
