回声测深仪的工作原理是利用换能器在水中发出声波，当声波遇到障碍物而反射回换能器时，根据声波往返的时间和所测水域中声波传播的速度，就可以求得障碍物与换能器之间的距离。声波在海水中的传播速度，随海水的温度、盐度和水中压强而变化。在海洋环境中，这些物理量越大，声速也越大。常温时海水中的声速的典型值为1500米/秒，淡水中的声速为1450米/秒。所以在使用回声测深仪之前，应对仪器进行率定，计算值要加以校正。
