若放大器的输入和输出端口共有四个引出端与外电路连接，这种网络称为四端网络。如果组成网络的所有元件都是线性元件，则这一网络称为线性网络。所谓线性元件是指参数不随电压和电流变化的元件。内部不含电源或内部虽有电源但对外相互抵消不起作用的网络称为无源网络。一般实用中多是无源线性四端网络。
