以呼吸急促，甚至鼻翼煽动，或张口抬肩不能平卧为其特征。见于外感或内伤等疾患，临床上分“实喘”和“虚喘”两类。“实喘”多由风寒或痰浊、痰热等所致。由风寒引起的，初起有恶寒发热等表症；由痰浊诱发的，则见胸中满闷，甚则咳引胸痛。由于痰热的，则发热，咳嗽痰盛，胸痛，烦躁等。“虚喘”又分肺弱、肾虚两种。肺弱的以喘促短气，咳声低弱，自汗畏风为主；肾虚的则以呼多吸少，动则喘甚，神疲肢冷为主。
