哑，发不出声也，此指阳气在此开始衰败。门，出入的门户也。该穴名意指督阳气在此散热冷缩。本穴物质为大椎穴传来的阳热之气，至本穴后因其热散而收引，阳气的散热收引太过则使人不能发声，故名。（病音）门名意与哑门同，（病音）为失语之意。
