咨询业，是对第三产业中以咨询服务为特点的各种行业的总称。因其特点为智力型服务，也被人们称为“头脑产业”，请咨询专家咨询被称为“借脑”。作为一种智力密集型的知识服务性产业，咨询的现代意义是指来自个体和组织外部的专业化技能，它以专门的知识、信息、经验为资源，针对不同的用户需求，提供解决某一问题的方案或决策建议。咨询一词，在汉语中有商量、询问、谋划和征求意见的含义。最初，咨和询为两词，咨表商量，询表询问。“咨询”一词最早见于《诗经》，其中有“载驰载驱，周爱咨询”的诗句，意思是说，君谴使臣，要使臣悉心察访民间疾苦以告天下。古代为统治者出谋划策的谋士、谏臣、军师和食客等就是专门从事咨询活动的人员。当然， 中国古代所从事的咨询活动以及对咨询一词的理解，都具有较大的随机性、随意性，跟现代咨询活动是不可同日而语的。
