和道流空手道的创始人为大冢博纪，大冢博纪出生于明治25年。6岁起学习柔道。于大正9年到船越义珍的明正塾学习空手道及日本神道扬心流柔术。大正13年，在皇居济宁馆道场举行的舞蹈演武会中参加琉球唐手术表演，大冢博纪表演自创的“唐手术乱取形”（现代空手道中的约束对打），以及“捕短刀”、“捕真剑白刃”博得好评。以此为契机，大冢博纪在昭和8年5月创设“和道流”即将空手道与日本柔术合而为一的意思。该流派受到“神道扬心流”柔术的影响颇深，
