含煤建造又称含煤地层或煤系。指在成因联系上大致连续沉积的含煤沉积岩层。岩层主要由各种粒度的粉砂岩、砂岩及泥岩等沉积岩组成。岩层除必须有煤层之外,有时还有石灰岩或砾岩层。如在煤系沉积过程中附近有火山活动,煤系中可能出现火山喷出物质组成的火山碎屑岩和火山熔岩。在煤系中还常伴生有其他沉积矿产,如油页岩、耐火黏土、铝土矿、磷铁矿、黄铁矿、赤铁矿、菱铁矿、褐铁矿,有时还可能有锰矿等。
