所谓“后硫化”，即是当制品硫化完成取出以后，由于橡胶导热性差，传热时间长，制品因散热而降温也就较慢，所以它还可以继续进行硫化，特将它称为“后硫化”。“后硫化”导致的抗张强度和硬度进一步增加，弹性和其它机械性能降低，制品的使用寿命因之受到损害。所以，制品越厚就越应将“后硫化”考虑进去。在一般情况下，可以根据抗张强度最高值略前的时间或以强伸积（抗张强度与伸长率的乘积）最高值的硫化时间定为正硫化时间。
