后工业社会是某些资产阶级学者划分的人类社会发展的一个历史阶段。由美国哈佛大学教授D·贝尔1959年在奥地利萨尔茨堡第一次提出，并在1973年发表的 《后工业社会》 一书中进行专门阐述。贝尔把人类社会发展的历史分为三个阶段。第一个阶段为前工业社会 (或称农业社会)，人们依赖于自然界提供的原料和人的体力，经济主要由农业、矿业、渔业和林业部门构成。第二阶段为工业社会，人们对自然界的依赖减少，用能源代替体力，依靠技术和机器从事大规模的商品生产。经济主要由制造业、交通运输业和商业等部门构成。第三阶段为后工业社会，人们依赖于信息，将致力于发展服务业。继贝尔之后的著名人物还有布热津斯基和托夫勒。
