按照国家有关技术政策，根据煤种、产状、开采方式和地区煤炭资源供需情况，以及地理条件规定的可采厚度下限，称最低可采厚度。达到最低可采厚度的煤层称可采煤层。 中国将煤层按厚度分为薄煤层、中厚煤层和厚煤层。①薄煤层，指地下开采时厚度在1.3m以下的煤层；露天开采时厚度在3.5m以下的煤层。②中厚煤层，指地下开采时厚度为1.3～3.5m的煤层；露天开采时厚度在3.5～10m的煤层。③厚煤层，指地下开采时厚度在3.5m以上的煤层； 露天开采时厚度在10m以上的煤层。
