叠层石构造（stromatolitic structure）又称叠层构造，由蓝绿藻（隐藻）呈层状生长，其细胞分泌黏液质捕陷和粘结沉积质点经碳酸盐化变硬而成。由两种基本层组成：①富藻纹层，又称暗层，藻类组分含量多；②富屑纹层，又称亮层，碎屑组分含量多。两种基本层叠置出现，即形成叠层构造。叠层构造形态变化多样，基本形态有层状、波状、柱状及锥状，发育于从潮上到潮下的潮间带。
叠层石和臼齿构造是前寒武纪较为引人注目的两种沉积现象。
