发芽势是指在发芽过程中日发芽种子数达到最高峰时，发芽的种子数占供测样品种子数的百分率，一般以发芽试验规定期限的最初1/3期间内的种子发芽数占供验种子数的百分比为标准。
这一现象后来有不同名称：如发芽势 （Germination energy）、生命力（Vitality）和幼苗活力（Seedlingvigor）等 等阳’71。可惜，这一现象当时并未引起人们重视。
