反刍胃复胃或多室胃，包括四个相通的隔室,按食物运转次序，从前到后分别叫做瘤胃、网胃、瓣胃、皱胃（见图反刍动物胃的结构）。前三个胃室合称前胃,不分泌胃液；第四个胃室即皱胃才有真正的胃腺,可分泌胃液,其消化作用和单胃动物的相同。哺乳动物偶蹄目的驼科、鹿科、长颈鹿科和牛科的动物都有反刍胃，故称反刍动物。
